Fu ( ) Department of Macromolecular Science and Laboratory of Molecular Engineering of Polymers Fudan University Shanghai 200433 China Abstract Crosslinked polystyrene microspheres with novel surface and inner morphologies were synthesized by seeded polymerization following a seed-swelling method, using uncrosslinked polystyrene microspheres as seeds and a mixture of toluene, styrene (St), and divinylbenzene (DVB) as the swelling agent. With the increasing toluene/ (St#DVB) ratio, the crosslinked particles changed from smoothsurfaced spheres to deformed spheres with dimples or heavy dents at the surface. A single hole inside the spherical particles was produced at low St/DVB ratio, while higher St/DVB ratios gave irregular dented or dimpled particles. Ultrathin crosssection observation by TEM revealed a non-uniformly crosslinked inner structure.

Polystyrene latex particles coated with crosslinked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)

Thermoresponsive colloidal particles were prepared by seeded precipitation polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in the presence of a crosslinking monomer, N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA), using polystyrene latex particles (ca. 50 nm in diameter) as seeds in aqueous dispersion. Phase transitions of the prepared poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAM, shells on polystyrene cores were stu...

Preparation and characterization of polystyrene microspheres in the presence of beta-cyclodextrin.

Using styrene as raw material, potassium persulfate as an initiator, beta-cyclodextrin as a stabilizer, polystyrene microspheres were successfully prepared with nice monodisperse feature by means of soap-free emulsion polymerization method. Experimental studies were performed in detail to check the effect of the synthesis process of the microspheres, the stabilizer dosage, monomer concentration...

Separation of Cholesterol from Other Steroids Using Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Prepared by Seeded Suspension Polymerization

Micron-sized particles of cholesterol-imprinted polymers were synthesized by seeded suspension polymerization in a mixture of 2-propanol and water using polystyrene microbeads as the seeds. Methacrylic acid was employed as the functional monomer to form complexes with template (cholesterol), along with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the crosslinker. After removal of template molecules, the c...

Synthesis of Silica/Polystyrene Nanocomposite Particles by Miniemulsion Polymerization

Miniemulsion polymerization is one of heterogeneous polymerization method that can be effectively used to synthesis of various novel organic-inorganic nanocomposite particles. This method can provide opportunity of good incorporation between the polymer and inorganic phases in the formed submicrometer-sized particles. In this article, we report preparation polystyrene/silica nanocomposite p...

Facile Preparation of Crosslinked Polymeric Nanocapsules via Combination of Surface-Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization and Ultraviolet Irradiated Crosslinking Techniques

A facile approach for the preparation of crosslinked polymeric nanocapsules was developed by the combination of the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization and ultraviolet irradiation crosslinking techniques. The well-defined polystyrene grafted silica nanoparticles were prepared via the SI-ATRP of styrene from functionalized silica nanoparticles. Then the grafted polystyrene cha...
